50 Years of Topstar

A tradition that moves.

For five decades, Topstar has been moving people in their everyday lives.

What began as a small chair factory has grown into a family business that has always been driven by movement – constantly adapting to new demands and rising to the challenges of every era.

“Innovation
since 1976.
Made in Germany.”

Prof. Dr. Rainer Maria Wagner
Managing Partner

In June 1976, Michael Wagner and his wife founded Topstar GmbH – with a clear vision: to develop the best office chairs. At the company's home in Langenneufnach, in Bavarian Swabia, passion and a spirit of innovation gave rise to the brand known as "the stars among swivel chairs". Modern designs in corduroy and denim looks captured the spirit of the time and quickly made Topstar a household name in the German furniture trade.

1976

Topstar is born. From craft workshop to manufacturer of ergonomic seating solutions.

In the 1980s, Michael Wagner had a groundbreaking idea: he developed the first ergonomic children's swivel chair featuring beloved Walt Disney characters. The concept was an instant hit – the first production run sold out in no time, creating an entirely new product category. At its peak, the Langenneufnach plant produced more than 5,000 children's swivel chairs a day, shipping them worldwide – an impressive success that still sets the standard today.

At the start of the 1990s, Topstar set new standards, already producing more than one million chairs a year. The Wagner family recognised the potential of the PC and internet age early on and developed ergonomic office chairs for the growing mail-order and cash-and-carry market. Thanks to innovative products, high quality and excellent value for money, demand rose to as many as 2.5 million office chairs a year – made possible by modern automation and digital processes.

At the turn of the millennium, Topstar responded to the changing world of work with a groundbreaking innovation: Sitness technology. Together, designer Stephan Meyer and Peter Wagner developed a unique joint that enables three-dimensional movement and redefined ergonomic sitting. Its launch in 2005 set new standards for healthy working. In 2008, Topstar achieved its first certification in quality and environmental management – another milestone reflecting its high standards of quality, sustainability and innovation.

In 2013, the company achieved a carbon-negative footprint for the first time – a major milestone in sustainable production. Driven by the vision of "moving space", Topstar began creating iconic designs with designer Stefan Diez in 2017 – designs that are now part of sophisticated architectural and interior concepts around the world.

Today, Sitness stands for innovative seating solutions that combine movement and comfort. With the Sitness 4D, developed under the guiding principle "Sit, Move, Improve!", a new generation of active sitting was born: the technology enables movement in every direction as well as a springy vertical motion. The German Brand Award 2022 and a Europe-wide TV campaign underline the success of this innovation, which is now one of the brand's most successful product launches.

„Sitness unites innovative technology with the ideas of creative designers and developers.“

For decades, we have believed in the power of movement – for more freedom, individuality and personal growth. 3D active sitting becomes a natural part of everyday life: activating, strengthening and inspiring. For more energy. For people with style, attitude and the courage to embrace change. That’s why we created the Sitness brand in 2005 – and in 2022, it won the German Brand Award. Because movement means improvement. In every direction. In your own style.

Sitness is tested and approved – by Aktion Gesunder Rücken (AGR), the German Campaign for Healthier Backs! Selected products have been tested by AGR and awarded the “Approved & Recommended” seal of quality. With our AGR-certified models, you can create the most important element of a healthy working environment. Our unique Sitness technology enables three-dimensional sitting. Freedom of movement in every direction promotes more active sitting, which unconsciously trains your back muscles and helps prevent back pain.

Sit, Move, Improve! This is the motto behind all our future Sitness products – led by our highlight product, the Sitness 4D, created by our Swiss designer and developer Thomas Walser. He has already designed numerous highly successful lifestyle products for the Sitness brand, getting hundreds of thousands of people moving while they sit with his extraordinary ideas.
His latest creation for Sitness is probably the most technically sophisticated product he has designed for us so far. Its smoothly engineered technology sets you in motion in every direction and adds a gentle vertical bounce – what we call the fourth dimension of active sitting.

WAGNER

Move your life

„We create spaces that move people –
healthy, individual and future-focused.“

Peter Wagner
Partner, Head of Brand & Design

Design that moves, movement that fits! When design and movement are in harmony, the result for us is a sense of well-being. In one short sentence, that sums up our top priority when developing the unique products of our WAGNER brand. Back in 1949, Moritz Wagner set the benchmark with his tavern chair. A style icon of the 1950s and 60s, it embodied design and well-being then – and still does today.

Today, furniture has to do more: it must combine functionality, durability and sustainability. Topstar meets this demand with passion and innovative strength – with resource-efficient production as its top priority. One example is the Titan Green by WAGNER: instead of aluminium, it uses glass-fibre-reinforced polyamide made from post-consumer recycled plastic – which can be recycled again at the end of its life cycle. This reduces the CO₂ footprint by up to 70% compared to a conventional office chair. The upholstery fabric is made from 100% recycled polyester and is Seaqual-certified: produced from recycled marine plastic and PET bottles.

Sustainability was the guiding focus in developing the d2 bespoke interior system. The modular plug-in system can be separated into pure material types, fully recycled and partly reused. Thanks to its space-saving flat-pack principle, transport and storage are especially efficient. High-quality recycled materials and resource-efficient design make d2 a forward-looking solution for sustainable interior architecture.

At Topstar, sustainability doesn't end with the product. Since 2005, waste cardboard has been turned into packaging filler and returned to the recycling loop. At the same time, production processes are continuously optimised and ergonomic workplaces created – for greater resource efficiency and healthy working conditions.
