50 Years of Topstar

A tradition that moves people.

For five decades, Topstar has been making a difference to people’s everyday lives.

What began as a small chair factory has grown into a family business that has always been characterised by a spirit of constant change and the ability to adapt to new demands in order to rise to the challenges of the times.

In June 1976, Michael Wagner and his wife founded Topstar GmbH—with a clear vision: to develop the best office chairs. At the company’s headquarters in Langenneufnach, in Bavarian Swabia, the brand “The Stars Among Swivel Chairs” was born out of passion and a spirit of innovation. Modern designs in corduroy and denim styles captured the spirit of the times and quickly established Topstar as a fixture in the German furniture retail industry.

1976er

Topstar is born. From a small craft business to a manufacturer of ergonomic seating solutions.

In the 1980s, Michael Wagner had a groundbreaking idea: He developed the first ergonomic children’s swivel chair featuring popular Walt Disney designs. The concept was an instant hit—the first production run sold out in no time. This gave rise to an entirely new product category. At its peak, the factory in Langenneufnach produced over 5,000 children’s swivel chairs daily and shipped them worldwide—an impressive success that continues to set the standard to this day.

The invention of the Mickey Mouse swivel chair—and an entirely new product category: the children's swivel chair.

By the early 1990s, Topstar was setting new standards and was already producing over one million chairs annually. The Wagner family recognized the potential of the PC and Internet era early on and developed ergonomic office chairs for the growing mail-order and walk-in markets. Thanks to innovative products, high quality, and excellent value for money, demand rose to as many as 2.5 million office chairs per year—made possible by modern automation and digital processes.

At the turn of the millennium, Topstar responded to changes in the workplace with a groundbreaking innovation: Sitness technology. Designers Stephan Meyer and Peter Wagner collaborated to develop a unique joint that enables three-dimensional movement and redefined ergonomic seating. Its introduction in 2005 set new standards for healthy working. This was followed in 2008 by the company’s first certification in quality and environmental management—another milestone reflecting its high standards for quality, sustainability, and innovation.

For decades, we have believed in the power of movement – for greater freedom, individuality and personal development: 3D dynamic seating becomes a natural part of everyday life: energising, invigorating and inspiring. For more energy. For people with style, poise and the courage to embrace progressive change. That’s why we developed the Sitness brand in 2005, for which we received the German Brand Award in 2022. Because movement means improvement. In every direction. In your own style.

New Work

– New Sitting

In a world that is constantly changing and increasingly shaped by technology and globalisation, the way we work is evolving. This calls for a reimagining of our working environments, as spaces are the driving force behind creative freedom. Discover the future of work now – an agile, creative and dynamic working environment!

Sitness has been tested and approved – by the Healthy Back Campaign! Selected products have been tested by the AGR and awarded the ‘Tested & Recommended’ seal of approval! With our AGR-certified models, you can create the most important element of a healthy working environment. Our unique Sitness technology ensures three-dimensional sitting. The freedom of movement in every direction promotes more active sitting, which unconsciously exercises the back muscles and thus helps prevent back pain.

Sit, Move, Improve! This is the motto that will underpin all our Sitness products in future. Leading the way is our flagship product, the Sitness 4D, created by our Swiss designer and developer Thomas Walser. He has already created numerous highly successful lifestyle products for the Sitness brand and, with his extraordinary ideas, has got hundreds of thousands of people moving whilst sitting.

His latest product for Sitness is arguably the most technically sophisticated he has designed for us to date. Its ingeniously refined technology moves people in all directions and also provides deep cushioning, which we refer to as the 4th dimension of active sitting.

Design that moves you, movement that fits! When design and movement are in harmony, we experience a sense of ‘well-being’. That sums up in a single sentence what we prioritise above all else when developing our unique products for our WAGNER brand. As early as 1949, Moritz Wagner set the benchmark with the development of his pub chair. As a style icon of the 1950s and 1960s, it combined the attributes of design and a sense of well-being then, just as it does today.

Furniture today has to offer more: it combines functionality, durability and sustainability. Topstar is committed to meeting this standard through passion and innovation – with resource-efficient production as its top priority. One example is the Titan Green from WAGNER: instead of aluminium, it uses recyclable plastic made from ‘post-consumer’ recycled polyamide with glass fibre – which can be recycled again at the end of its life cycle. This reduces the carbon footprint by up to 70% compared with a conventional office chair. The upholstery fabric is made from 100% recycled polyester and is Seaqual-certified: sourced from recycled marine plastic and PET bottles.

Sustainability was a key focus throughout the development of the d2 bespoke interior system. The modular plug-in system can be dismantled by material type, fully recycled and partially reused. Thanks to the space-saving flat-pack design, transport and storage are particularly efficient. High-quality recycled materials and a resource-efficient design make d2 a forward-looking solution for sustainable interior design.

Modular in design, built for circularity

At Topstar, sustainability does not stop at the product itself. Since 2005, cardboard waste has been recycled into packaging filler and returned to the recycling cycle. At the same time, production processes are continuously optimised and ergonomic workstations created – to conserve resources and ensure healthy working conditions.
